Bebung was conceived for a trio of musicians who did not live in the same city. I thought it would be interesting to write a piece that would allow the musicians to prepare independently while also gaining new insights when realized as a group.

 

Each musician received the a collection of score fragments and was asked to assemble two different realizations of some sequence of that material - one to be performed live and one to be performed as an audio playback track (labeled their "ghost double.") The resulting effect is a double trio - one visible, one invisible - sharing and responding to the same material in sometimes dramatically different ways.

Bebung can also be performed by larger groups, with or without "ghost doubles".
