THE BELL RINGERS (2019)
60'
community music piece for musicians and non-musicians
in collaboration with Third Coast Percussion
The BELL RINGERS was conceived as a large-scale community music event for musicians of any age and experience level, including those with no musical experience whatsoever. Participants are in four groups that play in an open space around a large bell, weaving a narrative that is told entirely through musical games. The audience is invited to sit and walk among the musicians for the duration of the piece.
The premiere took place at Millennium Park with over a hundred participants.
The Bell Ringers was commissioned for Third Coast Percussion with support from the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation, the Meany Center for the Arts at the University of Washington, the Julian Family Foundation, and the Third Coast Percussion New Works Fund. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. The Bell Ringers was developed and workshopped in collaboration with students from the People's Music School of Chicago.
